ANN & NANCY WILSON (HEART), & JANET ROBIN, OPENING SET

Cerritos Performing Arts Center 8/20/99!

"After missing Ann's non-Nancy outing as Heart last year at a local Indian reservation, I would've kicked myself hard if I missed the two of them together in this most intimate of settings. The Cerritos Center is a small community Opera House, much like the one in Sicily featured in Godfather Part III.

Opening the show was an extremely talented young singer/songwriter/guitarist named Janet Robin (http://www.janetrobin.com) whom I recognized immediately as the former lead guitarist for 80's chick-metal band "Precious Metal" who had fleeting fame as an act on Mercury Records. Janet had been plucked from that band to backup former Fleetwood Mac member Lindsay Buckingham for a long stint before breaking out as her own solo act. Her wry, thoughtful, and even sarcastic set of original songs about relationships and the pitfalls of going for it in the bowels of Hollywood were fun to listen to as was her between song banter. Now, I knew that Janet was a ripping lead player - trained by the late great Randy Rhodes - but the audience didn't realize it until she started wailing lead on her acoustic - much to their delight and applause. They must've thought she was from the Lillith Faire school. ("Lillith Schmillith" as Janet put it on stage.) She has a new CD out which did brisk business at the merchandise table with Janet meetin' and greetin', and is apparently getting lots of airplay on college radio in Montana, of all places. Hopefully, she will get a chance to spotlight her big talents to a bigger audience."
